About — Localworks Foundation

Who We Are

The Localworks Foundation (LWF) is a Uganda-based foundation established in 2023 as the non-commercial arm of Localworks, an award-winning multi-disciplinary design and build collaborative specialising in the design and realisation of ecological ar chitecture in East Africa. Through our work as green architects, engineers and builders, we have experienced first-hand that the necessary greening of the region’s construc tion sector is hampered by a severe knowl edge and skills gap, be it the competent use of local regenerative materials, the efficient application of passive design principles or the integration of innovative appropriate technologies. It is the aim of the Localworks Foundation to help closing this gap.

What We Do

LWF works across two sectors: Research and Education. We intend to deliver practical material and construction technology research; train designers and builders in the application of green design principles and technologies; and make a direct impact by providing our expertise to community initiatives which share our values and are in need of our support.

Why We Do What We Do

About 39% of global carbon emissions can be attributed to the construction sector, and East Africa possesses first-hand experience of the early consequences of the climate crisis. Nevertheless, while facing the challenge of an unprecedented population growth combined with a stifling infrastructure and housing crisis at the same time, the region lacks any serious ambition and expertise to set the course towards a more sustainable construction sector. As green designers and builders with decades of experience we believe that we are in a unique position to develop locally appropriate solutions, and to credibly demonstrate scalable solutions that can accommodate the region’s growth with out destroying its means of survival.
